With laptops, desktops, and all-in-one devices, you can select a power scheme in Windows that will stretch battery life as far as possible or keep your system running at top speed all the time. Here’s how to select the power scheme you want from the Windows taskbar.

1. If you have a laptop or desktop computer, press and hold or right-click the power (battery meter) icon in the notification area of the Windows desktop.

2. Click or tap Power Options.

3. The most common power options are shown. To see additional options, click Show additional plans.

4. Choose a plan setting from those listed.

5. Click or press and drag to the left to make the built-in screen darker, or to the right to make the screen brighter.

6. Close the dialog box when finished.
